Leicester Market Refurbishment
A year-long programme to transform Leicester’s historic outdoor market starts this month.
Under the £1.8 million scheme, all of the market’s stalls will be replaced and new LED lighting installed.
An attractive wooden canopy edging will give the market a fresh look, while helping to protect shoppers and traders from the wind and rain.
The market layout will be reconfigured, creating better routes for shoppers and making it easier for traders to showcase their goods.
Trading will continue throughout the works.
This comes after calls to conceal the “eyesore” rear of the Weatherspoons Corn Exchange, however, residents of Leicester are warming to the characteristic feature of the building.
Christmas market traders
It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas… Traders who are keen to take a stall at this year’s fair are invited to register their interest by 30th April. This year the market will open on Saturday 1 December and close on Christmas Eve, with a strong focus on high quality gifts, crafts and decorations. The market will be bigger and better, in an improved setting, with a new screen at the rear of the Corn Exchange providing a festive backdrop for the Alpine-style chalets.
Last Christmas, traders vowed never to return after the market was moved from its usual plot on Humberstone Gate and Gallowtree Gate to the purpose built area between the Leicester Corn Exchange and Knight and Garter pub. We hope they’ve changed their mind but if not, we’re sure there’ll be plenty of new and interesting stalls and chalets available.
